The only time I ever really change things up is if someone has strong pink tones in their face but is still golden toned in their neck and check - in that case I'd match them to an NC. If you're more golden, you'll wear an NC. We match foundation to the undertone in the skin - so if your skin is more pink/peach based, you'll get an NW foundation. forget about whether something is NC or NW. Hi! I work for MAC and I just want to explain a little bit more. It's a confusing way to do things, but I guess it works for some people. according to mac, what they call warm toned people (those with pink undertones) should wear what they call the cool foundation. Their color system operates on opposites, so the warm and neutral warm foundations are recommended for cool toned people, and vica versa. If you got matched at a MAC store, and told you were a NW-whatever, that means you are NOT warm. MAC's theory is that it's better to cancel out your natural undertone, so that you don't look excessively yellow if you're warm, etc. If your skin has pink undertones, you have cool skin. If your skin has yellow undertones, you have warm skin. Unfortunately, even though it's very well known, a lot of the people that I've talked to don't exactly understand it. One of the most commonly used ways is MAC's color system. In my search for the perfect foundation, I came across several different ways to communicate your skin tone and color to other people.
