Not bad for a silly little cartoon about robots that turn into cars and planes. In 2023, children attended workshops and camps focused on NASA's mission, like the ARTEMIS project that will put the next man, and first woman, on the surface of the moon. They use what they learn to present and develop their own ideas for scientific advancement and invention. The program engages children's creativity in new ways, teaching them the scientific method and design processes. This project engages hundreds of students that teaches children about cutting edge technologies from hydroelectricity to aerospace technology to fiber optics. In fact, some have even created real scientific miracles. Those who didn't become storytellers themselves would carry the creative skills they developed on the floors of living rooms and bedrooms across the world into their adult lives. Joe team as children created their own "lore." Many of these kids would only put away their toys and these brilliant sagas in favor of typewriters or keyboards, crafting their own stories. Optimus Prime could team up with Spider-Man or the G.I. They also created crossovers that would put the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe to shame. From there, they dreamed up larger and more epic stories than 1980s animators had the time or budget to create. They merely had to build on the foundations built by the series. Playing with these figures was kids' first go at "fan fiction." They didn't have to create universes, characters, or conflicts. Naysayers thought this would limit the development of children's imaginations, copying what they saw on TV. While the movies make Optimus Prime are a little more lethal, the underlying principles of the character remain the same. In Cullen's deep, gravelly voice, Optimus Prime became a vehicle for moral lessons that highlighted compassion, forgiveness and the kind of strength Larry knew the heroes of the day lacked. The "heroes" of films like Death Wish, First Blood and the Dirty Harry movies were sinister murderers who killed anyone they deemed to villainous to live. In the late 1970s and 1980s, films and television were full of Hollywood pretenders. Be strong enough to be gentle." Cullen took the advice and made the voice of Optimus Prime the voice of his hero, Larry. Don't go yelling and screaming and pretending you're a tough guy. Don't be one of those Hollywood pretenders. "Peter, if you're gonna be a hero," Larry said, "be a real hero. He told his brother he was going to audition as the voice of a "truck," but one that was supposed to be a superhero. "Larry" Cullen was a US Marine and veteran of the Vietnam War. This story is so important to Cullen that even though the video presentation before his award included it, he reiterated it during his acceptance speech. The character, and his distinct voice, was a vital element to what made the show special. The outcry from fans - young and old - was so loud and so angry, Transformers brought Optimus Prime and Cullen back to life almost immediately. The toy companies needed to promote the new line of characters. Transformers: The Movie was released in 1986, and it featured the death of Optimus Prime. However, 2007 wasn't the first movie to feature Cullen's most iconic character. The above-mentioned series even went so far as to film special public service announcements about everything from stranger danger to the dangers of drugs, which were tacked on to the end of the episodes.Īll three series tried to make the jump to feature films, and all but the Transformers failed. Thus, they tried to imbue these stories with the kind of moral allegory science fiction was meant to make. Second, they knew the parents - meaning the people with the money - wouldn't let their children watch mindless commercials. First, without truly well-crafted characters and stories, young children wouldn't care about the toys the shows were meant to promote. The animation companies behind these series knew two things for certain.
